Your trip in Sibiu

Sibiu is a medieval town that lies in the South-Eastern part of Transylvania, at the bottommarchiza of the Carpathians. It has always been considered a mysterious town, a citadel so well fortified and so difficult to conquer.

If you want to learn more about its beginnings, the legend of the brave knight Hermann, the stories about the Saxons and the Romanians, stories about buildings and people, the legend of Dracula’s son, why shouldn’t we tell a lie on Liars’ Bridge and the impact of communism on such a historical town, then we invite you to have a guided tour. For a few hours you’ll travel in time, you’ll live your own story, your own fantasy.

   
   

If you are in a hurry and you don’t have too much time to spend in Sibiu, we suggest you a short walk in the historic part of the city. 

piata micaWe shall visit the three main squares: the Large, the Little and the Huet Square with their historical monuments, the Council Tower (one of the oldest well-preserved towers in Sibiu), we shall cross the Liars’ Bridge (provided you don’t tell any lies!), and visit the impressive gothic Evangelical Church.

We shall admire the Apprentices’ House and the Stairs’ Tower. Our visit will end up with an unforgettable view over the Lower and Upper Town.

   
   
   
   

The Big Tour can vary from three hours to one day.

For more than three hours we shall “embark” on a tour to discover Sibiu through its different historic stages: the little Saxon community established on the bank of a river led by a brave knight, the little fortress with no more than one hundred inhabitants, the best fortified citadel in Transylvania, the medieval town, the greatest trade center in Transylvania, the best developed town in the Eastern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the center of the national movement, the third town in Romania where the Revolution burst and finally, the European Capital of Culture. bridge and church

On our tour we shall stop and visit various churches, the famous Brukenthal Museum, towers, bastions, walls of fortification, old buildings, narrow streets, darken and mysterious inner yards.

If you are eager to discover more of Sibiu, we suggest you to have a visit at the Open Air Museum, the biggest museum in Romania. It is located in the middle of a forest, at about 4 km from Sibiu, on the bank of a lake.

In 2007, the theme of the program Sibiu, European Capital of Culture was Sibiu. City of Culture. City of Cultures. In the historic part of the city there are no more than 7 churches of different denominations: the Roman-Catholic Church, the Evangelical Church, the Reformed Church, the Orthodox Cathedral, the Greco-Orthodox Church, the Franciscan Church and a Synagogue.

During our tour we shall visit these historical and religious monuments (according to your desire) and learn more about their history and traditions.

The first museum opened for the public in Romania, in 1817; it represents one of the mostBrukenthal Museum important art museums in Romania, with an interesting history. A visit which, not only will take you back in time, but it will make you feel that romantic baroque atmosphere of the 18th century.

 

Did you know that the building which hosts the History Museum used to be the Town Hall of Sibiu for more than 4 centuries? Did you know that it represents one of the best preserved gothic monuments in Transylvania? Did you know that its tower used to be used as a prison? La Ursul Negru” (“The Black Bear”) used to be the first pharmacy opened in our country (1498).
