Transylvania... the land over the Carpathians
Many stories have been told about Transylvania; so many legends that make us shiver with fear, amuse us and even give us that strong feeling that we’re living our own fantasy.
Transylvania means mystery; it is the mystery of a civilization that goes far back in time, the mystery of a land deeply marked by a troubled history, the mystery of a culture and tradition so well-preserved and so authentic.
The first Saxon and Hungarian settlers arrived in these areas about 850 years ago and started to build small colonies which, during the next centuries, were transformed into strong beautiful fortresses. The settlers were great craftsmen and traders, they bought with them their traditions, customs, civilization and education and built beautiful towns and villages. Due to these western influences, Transylvania developed quickly during the following centuries transforming itself into a prosperous land.
We invite you to an unforgettable journey in Transylvania! Here, you’ll discover a new, unrevealed world with breathtaking landscapes where time seems immortal. You’ll also meet locals and their stories.
Sibiu / Hermannstadt
The first pages from the history of the city are strictly linked to the arrival of the Saxon colonists brought here by the Hungarian kings eager to consolidate their reign in Transylvania.
Sibiu was mentioned for the first time in documents in 1191. It was firstly named Hermannsdorf (the Village of Hermann) but, two centuries later, due to its strong development it became Hermannstadt (the Town of Hermann). During the centuries, due to the Saxon influences, Sibiu developed a lot, and it soon became the best fortified town in Transylvania. It also developed from a cultural, economical and administrative point of view becoming the most important town in the Eastern part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Today, if you have a walk on the little narrow medieval streets of the town, you will feel the mysterious atmosphere of the past… every building has its own story, the walls of the fortress still keep the marks of a turbulent history. Every summer the town explodes, but not because of the canons’ fire but because of the fireworks which let us know a new festival, another story has begun.
We invite you to discover Sibiu throughout a guided tour which will make you better understand why it has always been considered a place of refuge for many important people, a historic and mysterious town and finally, an European Capital of Culture.
